Analysis: State Budget’s Impact on Counties
The governor signed and approved the state budget for the 2012-13 biennium on June 17 for a total of $172.3 billion, a $15.2 billion decrease from the current biennium (2010-11). The TAC County Information Project has prepared a six-page chart showing the budget’s impact on various local programs. Additional funding is anticipated for several county programs as the Legislature continues to decide how to fund public education during the first called special session.

TAC legislative staff has summarized some significant county-related bills that passed during the 82nd Regular Legislative Session. A more comprehensive list of county-related bills that passed will be available soon and will be discussed more extensively during the 2011 TAC Post-Legislative Conference.

Update: Special Called Session Nears End
The first called special session will come to a close Wednesday, June 29. The session was called to allow more time for debate on issues relating to fiscal matters, congressional redistricting, the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association and sanctuary cities. The TAC Legislative Department is monitoring county-related provisions in the legislation. As of June 24, it is unclear whether another special session will be called if any issues remain unresolved when the current session ends.
